Paul Wellings
Former general practitioner Henfield, West Sussex (b 1929; q Cambridge/University College Hospital 1953; BA, DCH, DObst RCOG), d 7 December 2004.After qualifying, and doing house jobs, Paul did a short service commission for three years, serving in Cyprus and Africa in the British Somaliland Scouts.
After leaving the army he did further hospital jobs in Manchester and Hull and then became a general practitioner in Henfield, West Sussex. He stayed in Henfield until his early retirement in 1988, following a myocardial infarction during a Saturday morning surgery. During his time in Henfield, he was regarded as a great diagnostician by GP and consultant colleagues alike, and his truthful, pithy, and stimulating referral letters, often typed by him, were a delight to read.
He worked as a clinical assistant to Dr Joanna Sheldon, late consultant physician, at the Royal Sussex County Hospital, Brighton.
Paul and his wife, Margaret, moved to Cley-next-the-Sea, Norfolk, in their retirement. There he was able to pursue his many interests, including woodworking, writing, and ornithology. One of his recent projects was to write an article about life as a medical officer in the British Somaliland Scouts.
