John Warren Jordan
Former consultant chest physician to the Pontefract, Castleford, Selby, and Goole areas in East and South Yorkshire (b Treharris, Glamorgan, 1913; q St Bartholomew’s 1946; MD, FRCP), died on 19 August 2004 following cardiac failure.Warren Jordan was educated in South Wales, where, at age 8, he "wanted to be a doctor." On leaving school he worked in a bank locally and later in London, and took the BCom degree of London University. As a conscientious objector he was directed, when the war began, to work as a hospital porter at the Radcliffe Infirmary, where he found the atmosphere inspirational. He entered St Bartholomew’s Hospital Medical School in 1942, qualifying in 1946. After junior appointments in the Barts sector and gaining the London MD and the FRCP, Warren returned to South Wales, becoming assistant chest physician to the Rhymney and Sirhowy Valley and North Monmouthshire Hospital Management Committees. In 1953 he took up the appointment of consultant chest physician, based at Pontefract, but with wide responsibilities in East and South Yorkshire. Warren saw the decline in tuberculosis and consequent closure of Gateforth Hospital, but asthma was accelerating in incidence and severity. He practised hypnotherapy with success in the treatment of this disease and of tobacco addiction and other anxiety-based disorders. Warren Jordan was one of the dedicated, hard-working consultant physicians who ensured that the rapidly developing changes in medicine were available to all the patients for whom he was responsible. He retired in 1982. He was a great reader with widespread interests and enjoyed music. As a Baptist Christian, he lived out his profound religious faith. He leaves a wife, Patricia, herself a retired psychiatrist; three children; and four grandchildren. [David Charley]
