Lorna Mary Harris
Former general practitioner Ancaster (b 1937; q Royal Free Hospital, London, 1962), died on 1 September 2004 from oesophageal cancer.
After serving in several hospital placements in London, Bristol, Leicester, and Birmingham, where she studied orthopaedics, paediatrics, and microbiology, Lorna joined a GP trainer in the Isle of Lewis. Such was her impact on the island that she maintained her friendships until her death and would have continued to practise there, had it not been for her father’s illness. So it was that, in 1968, she joined the practice of Caythorpe and Ancaster in Lincolnshire, initially as a locum and shortly after as a partner. For many years she also worked in family planning and as an occupational physician.
Lorna demonstrated all the attributes of a true country family doctor: compassion, practicality, and a gift of selflessness that endeared her to her patients. To her colleagues, too, she occupied a unique position. As the only female partner her insight was invaluable and impartial.
Retirement gave her more time to enjoy the countryside that she loved, accompanied by her two dogs. In addition she had time to explore the four corners of the globe. The practice community was unaware until her funeral that she had founded and sponsored the Wilpeg Trust in memory of her parents, Wilfred and Peg. This charity provided, anonymously, much needed funds to benefit needy local people and animals.
Lorna will be greatly missed by the entire community. [Roger Gee]
