David Ernest Calwell
Principal in general practice Belfast (b Belfast 1927; q Queen’s University,
Belfast, 1953; MICGP, MRCGP), died from myelodysplasia on 26 August 2004.
After qualifying Ernest worked in Lisburn and Lurgan Hospitals before
joining his father in general practice. Following his father’s death he spent
several years singlehanded building up an extensive general and maternity
practice. Subsequently he joined a group practice and had particular interests
in dermatology and obstetrics. The practice covered the religious divide
in Belfast and he often had problems doing calls during the Troubles in the
disturbed areas where the practice was situated. On one occasion he negotiated
his way through a barricade after recognising the man behind the mask as
one of his own patients. He was an accomplished artist, member of the Irish
Astronomical Association, and an excellent golfer, qualifying for the Irish
Close and the North of Ireland Championship on several occasions.
He leaves a wife, Heather, son Ian, and granddaughter Sophie. He was predeceased
by his daughter, Emma, in 2000. [H Calwell]
