Henry de Chair Baker
Former consultant pathologist Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital (b London 1924; q Manchester 1948; MD, FRCPath), died from prostate cancer on 5 February 2004.
Henry was educated at Manchester Grammar School and gained his MD as a demonstrator in morbid anatomy at his medical school. His first consultant post was at Dudley Hospital, but his principal career was as a consultant histopathologist and director of pathology services at the Norfolk and Norwich group of hospitals from 1967 to 1983.
With characteristic energy and clarity of mind he set about reorganising the pathology services in the north east quadrant of East Anglia, reducing the number of laboratories to four and redesigning the new laboratories in Norwich; he also appointed the first full time pathologist to Great Yarmouth and Lowestoft hospitals. Recognising the wealth of teaching material at the Norfolk and Norwich Hospital, he established the first rotating senior registrar post in histopathology and helped establish Norwich as an examination centre for the MRCPath. He played many major roles on management committees in his hospital and beyond. His courage, sharp analytical mind, wisdom, helpfulness, sense of fun, and, above all, his transparent integrity were key elements in shaping his successful career. Outside work he was blessed with a loving wife and family. He was a first class racing dinghy sailor, later in life becoming a keen cruising sailor and commodore of his yacht club in Orford. He also developed a passion for photography. He leaves a wife, Charmian; three children; and five grandsons. [Philip F Roberts]
