- Eric William Hardman
Former general practitioner Chepstow, Gwent (b Salford 1907; q Manchester 1930; MRCGP), d 20 August 2003.
Eric attended University of Manchester Medical School, where he excelled in athletics, in particular the high jump. After qualification he had hoped for a career in general surgery but finances did not allow. He began general practice in Leeds but soon decided to buy into a practice in semi-rural Chepstow, to where he moved with his wife, Stella, in 1936. There he spent many happy and fulfilling years in his busy practice. In the late 1960s the practice published a paper in the BMJ following a local outbreak of hepatitis caused by liver fluke in watercress.
He played a full part in the local community, attended church, and became a founder member of St Pierre Golf and Country Club in the early 1960s, later becoming captain and then president. He also enjoyed sailing, gardening, and walking. Eric always commanded great respect and is remembered with much fondness by many Chepstow people for his caring manner, availability, and involvement on a very personal level.
He retired in 1972 and for many years continued to enjoy his golf and, increasingly, vegetable gardening. Following some health problems in the 1980s he and Stella moved to Chingford, Essex, in 1992 to be close to their elder daughter and son in law. There they kept active and thoroughly enjoyed family contacts. He leaves a wife, four children (three in health/social services), seven grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren. [Anthony Hardman]
