- Harold Logan Courtenay
Former general practitioner South Shields (b 13 June 1927; q Queen’s University, Belfast, 1950; DRCOG 1962), d 14 September 2002.Harold came to South Shields as a principal in 1958 and, in 1964, was one of the founding partners of the medical group that was to become Marsden Road Health Centre. Delivering high quality general practice till the day he retired, he managed to combine an inquiring mind with a great love of both medicine and patients. Harold fully embraced modern medicine with its desktop computers, evidence based practice, and internet research. He was known and respected by all his colleagues and in 1994 acted as an IHD facilitator increasing the use of aspirin post-MI and teaching CPR skills to primary care staff. He combined his general practice career with a clinical assistantship in genitourinary medicine.
Harold was more than just a skilled diagnostician and compassionate family doctor—he was a legend. No one who worked with him could forget his outbursts when things went wrong. I know of no one else who would have been taken seriously when he ordered the receptionists to get the local lighthouse foghorn turned off as it was disturbing his surgery! Never mind the ships that might flounder on the coastal rocks . . .
Harold fought a long battle with prostate cancer and as a patient challenged both his oncologists and myself by quoting results of recent trials relevant to his therapy, no doubt taken from the internet! He was a good doctor, a great friend, and an amazing patient.
He is survived by his wife, Sandra; his children Amanda, Timothy, and Robin; and his six grandchildren. [Colin Bradshaw]
