Kunal Raychaudhuri
Former consultant psychiatrist Hollymoor Hospital, Birmingham (b Berhampur
1928; q Calcutta 1955; DPM, FRCPsych), d 9 January 2003.
After house officer appointments in obstetrics and gynaecology and three
years serving in the Indian Army Medical Corps, Kunal Raychaudhuri came
to the United Kingdom in 1960 and started his training in psychiatry. Appointed
consultant psychiatrist with special interest in rehabilitation and community
care at Hollymoor Hospital, Birmingham, in 1972, he worked with prodigious
energy to establish a fine rehabilitation service for the hospital and
a framework for community care in East Birmingham. Kunal had a true understanding
of and compassion for the plight of those disabled by serious mental illness,
and an unflagging resolve to use his best efforts to forward their cause.
Forthright, independent minded, warm, and generous in nature, he commanded
much respect and affection from colleagues and patients alike. His former
wife, Myra, and their two daughters and three grandchildren survive him.
