Paul Atkins
Former consultant surgeon Liverpool (b 26 June 1933; q King’s College Hospital, London, 1957; MS, FRCS), d 2 October 2002.
Paul came from a musical family and played the violin as a student but not to the detriment of his studies. He always wanted to specialise in surgery and it was while working in Plymouth that he met his wife, Connie, a ward sister at Freedom Fields Hospital, beginning a long and happy partnership for life. After prolonged training in London, mainly at King’s College Hospital, he was pleased to be appointed to his consultant post in Liverpool in 1970, first at the David Lewis Northern Hospital and Walton Hospital, subsequently at the Royal Liverpool Hospital and University Hospital Aintree, where he continued to work until his retirement in 1998.
At first he was on a very intensive duty rota and it was only later in his career that this became less arduous. He had a special interest in endocrine surgery, working closely with physicians in the care of patients, and was a founder member of the British Association of Endocrine Surgeons, organising the annual meeting in Liverpool in the year of his retirement.
He was known by his anaesthetist as a good timekeeper and was paid the ultimate compliment that if surgery was needed she would be happy to have him do it.
He made several visits to Libya to teach and to examine, always speaking well of his Libyan colleagues as he did of others—he was very slow to criticise others.
He was driven by a strong Christian faith, and a less arrogant or pretentious man would be hard to find, but once decided on a course of action he would be determined and tenacious in following it through.
He leaves his wife, Connie; a son, Timothy, and a daughter, Joanne; and he recently was pleased to see his new grandson, Gabriel. [John Goodwill, Robin Downie]
