Andrew King
Former consultant chest physician St Luke’s Hospital, Bradford (b 1942; q Edinburgh 1967; FRCP Ed and London), died after
a long illness on 30 October 2001.
Andy’s early career was dominated by his time as a lecturer in the department of medicine at Edinburgh Royal Infirmary, where
he acquired an understanding of physiology that underpinned his subsequent work. He returned to his home county of Yorkshire
and (in 1975) became a consultant chest physician in Bradford. Sustained by his never-failing interest in human nature and
by his impressive memory he carried a large workload for many years. His down-to-earth personality inspired loyalty and affection
from patients and colleagues alike. Unfortunately ill health forced his retirement in 1993 (six years after coronary artery
surgery). His last few years were overshadowed by distressing disability, which he endured with extraordinary courage. He
maintained his interest in steam trains and he valued his holidays on the Norfolk Broads. He leaves a wife, Rita, and three
sons. [Richard Woodhead]
