Harris Waters
Former consultant anaesthetist Dryburn Hospital, Durham, 1947-78 (b 1912; q Liverpool 1936; DA, FRCA), died suddenly on 3
September 2001.
Initially a general practitioner in Wales, Sunderland, and Chilton, County Durham, he became interested in anaesthesia, acquiring
the DA. Specialising as a full time anaesthetist, he came to Dryburn Hospital, Durham, in 1947, where he set up the anaesthetic
department, becoming senior consultant with the advent of the NHS. He was much respected by patients for his caring clinical
skills. In 1964 he was elected chairman of the North of England Society of Anaesthetists. A keen sportsman in his youth, he
played golf until he was 80. He had wide tastes in music, but was particularly keen on jazz of the 1930s. His passion for
word games and crosswords continued unabated. A gentle, deep thinking but humorous, well respected man, he delighted in the
company of young and old alike. He took great pleasure from his family and pride in his Jewish faith. He leaves a wife, Sonia,
with whom he had recently celebrated their diamond wedding anniversary; three sons (one a surgeon); and six grandchildren
(one also a surgeon). [Kenneth J Waters, Timothy S Waters]
