Ten thousand steps a day is widely promoted as a target for healthy living. Fortunately, a meta-analysis of eight prospective studies with a total of more than 20 000 participants confirms that this is good advice. Among older adults—the mean age of the participants was 63 years—taking 6000 to 9000 steps a day reduced the risk of cardiovascular disease by around 50% compared with taking 2000 steps a day (Circulation doi:10.1161/CIRCULATIONAHA.122.061288).
