Brain abscess and risk of cancer

Follow up of over 1000 patients treated for cerebral abscess revealed that the incidence of cancer was doubled during the first 10 years after diagnosis in comparison with a control group matched for age, sex, and place of residence. No one form of cancer predominated. Neoplasms of the brain and eye, metastatic cancer, respiratory tract cancer, and gastrointestinal cancer occurred at roughly similar frequencies (Neurology doi:10.1212/WNL.0000000000200769).
