Having a single guideline for the management of asthma in the UK would, of course, be desirable, but the British Thoracic Society (working with the Scottish Intercollegiate Guideline Network) and the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) have two separate and differing philosophies, which make this highly unlikely.1
