Alina Teresa Piesowicz was born in Warsaw in 1935. She spent her childhood in Poland during the war years before coming to England as a refugee shortly after the war ended. Her family settled in Ealing, and she gained a place at Guy’s Hospital Medical School in 1953, qualifying in 1958. …
