A recent study which has shown lansoprazole has some activity against Mycobacterium tuberculosis with an incidence of tuberculosis two thirds lower in people taking lansoprazole compared to other proton pump inhibitors, omeprazole and pantoprazole as mentioned in the latest Minerva section of the BMJ.
With increasingly more antibiotic resistant infections developing and seemingly little reduction in the use of antibiotics in both human health care systems and antibiotic use in the farming industry, does this represent another avenue of research that may help with the fight against antimicrobial resistance?
There have been a number of papers documenting non-antimicrobial drugs with antimicrobial effects. Notably, ibuprofen has been found to have broad spectrum activity against gram positive bacteria (Staphylococcus aureus and Bacillus subtilis), yeasts (Candida albicans) and fungus (Aspergillus brasiliensus)1. Whereas another study has shown that sertraline, licensed for depression, has some anti fungal activity towards candida species, resulting in lack of growth of species due to lack of hyphal elongation and decreased virulence when exposed to sertraline2.
Mentioned are just two studies showing antimicrobial effects from drugs commonly used for other illnesses not due to infection. Is there a future in the fight against resistance with augmenting current antimicrobials with other commonly used drugs?
