William Brian Andrew Barwell went to St Mary’s Hospital Medical School in 1980 from Clare College, Cambridge, in order to complete his undergraduate clinical studies. In his final year at Cambridge he had studied history of art, which highlights his wide range of interests.
William excelled as a medical student, combining a joyous approach to life and friendship with a natural affinity for the art of medicine. He was instrumental in rejuvenating the “Mary’s Boat Club,” which he captained, as his father had done. He acquired an extraordinary number of lifelong friends and devoted admirers while at St Mary’s—not just from the boat club but a diverse bunch …
