John Perry was born in Wolverhampton but largely brought up in Nottingham, where his father was a medical officer of health. He never wanted to be anything other than a doctor and qualified from the Welsh National School of Medicine in Cardiff in 1970. He moved to Ipswich to one of the early vocational training schemes for general practice run by the giants of the time, Ian Tait and John Stevens. This gave John a lifelong vision and passion for what could be achieved in general practice.
