Prime minister promises reviews of organ donation and Mental Health Act

The prime minister has announced plans to change the law on organ donation in England to presume consent unless people opt out.

The move, aimed at increasing the number of organ donations, was announced by Theresa May in her keynote speech to the Conservative Party conference in Manchester on Wednesday 4 October and will be subject to consultation. The Labour Party made the same commitment at its annual conference in Brighton last week.

The announcement means that England is set to follow Wales in moving to an opt-out system of organ donation. Scotland is also consulting on whether to move to this system.1
