Twenty four hour glucose monitoring halves adverse birth outcomes in pregnant women with type 1 diabetes, study finds

Monitoring blood glucose levels continuously during pregnancy with an implanted device halved complications associated with hyperglycaemia in babies born to women with type 1 diabetes compared with standard finger prick testing, an international trial has reported.1

One in two babies born to women with type 1 diabetes may have complications— including premature or still birth, congenital anomalies, or being larger than average—resulting from exposure to maternal hyperglycaemia. There has been no reduction in these complications over the past 40 years.
