Rapid responses are electronic comments to the editor. They enable our users
to debate issues raised in articles published on bmj.com. A rapid response
is first posted online. If you need the URL (web address) of an individual
response, simply click on the response headline and copy the URL from the
browser window. A proportion of responses will, after editing, be published
online and in the print journal as letters, which are indexed in PubMed.
Rapid responses are not indexed in PubMed and they are not journal articles.
The BMJ reserves the right to remove responses which are being
wilfully misrepresented as published articles or when it is brought to our
attention that a response spreads misinformation.
From March 2022, the word limit for rapid responses will be 600 words not
including references and author details. We will no longer post responses
that exceed this limit.
The word limit for letters selected from posted responses remains 300 words.
Research facilitation and support by health services is of paramount importance specially in the developing countries where there are lots of procedural delays, difficulty in getting permission from health authorities and a hostile manpower working in the health services reluctant to support research for further improvement in the health services with benefits to the patients and service providers alike. Many a times, conducting research under the routine health care system is laden with speculations, criticisms, discouragement, and researchers have to face hostile environment from the staff and the patients. The role of research in health services is less acknowledged even by the health administrators and thus lack encouragement and support. The view that the lacunae in the service provision will be exposed which will attract criticism from the public and Government is also one of the discouraging factors for the health administrators in granting permission to conduct research. A meaningful dialogue with the health administrators, maintaining confidentiality of data which is to be used for health service improvement and not necessarily criticisms but a healthy criticism with recommendations for improvement of health services will help in encouraging research environment in health services.
