Women in Northern Ireland to get free abortion on NHS in England

Women from Northern Ireland are to be given access to abortions free of charge on the NHS in England, the UK government has announced.

The climbdown came after a decision by the House of Commons speaker, John Bercow, to allow MPs to vote on an amendment to that effect to the Queen’s speech put down by the Labour MP Stella Creasy.

Several Conservatives backed the amendment, threatening the government—which has a narrow majority—with its first defeat of the new parliament.
