GPs should be careful not to act outside of their competence when asked to declare that their patients are fit to participate in marathons, medical defence experts have said.
The Medical Protection Society (MPS) issued the advice after questions from GPs about whether to sign “fitness to participate” forms for patients before training for marathons or other sporting events when their clinical knowledge may be insufficient to deem the patient fit to take part.
