Bertram Gerard Moon (“Mickey”) was born into a large family, many of whom were teachers. He was his parents’ firstborn child, and three sisters followed. His father died when Mickey was just 9 years old, and his teacher aunts schooled him to success in the scholarship exams and ensured he was able to complete his secondary education at the then Wednesbury Boys High School.
