This is one of the most poignant and insightful letters published by BMJ in many years and should be read by all practising doctors, nurses and other health care professionals.

In fairness, it must be added that in general new arrivals to these islands enjoy the most tolerant and civilised treatment. I base this assertion on my long tenure in the NHS, though I do not deny the existence of bad apples, which may lurk in any basket.
