Margaret McCartney is correct that there are ways to save money in the NHS that don't rely on not treating patient , but that does not fit with the present political ideology.
Hardly ever mentioned is the cost of the market. This has been estimated to be at least £4.5 million (Ref) and possibly up to £10 million if it is accepted that administration costs rose from 5% before the introduction of the market to 15% (or more) now.
This exposes the arguments for charging, and charging foreigners in particular, for what they are: no more than a politically convenient distraction from the real crisis caused by deliberate underfunding. The sums involved are a small fraction of the cost of the unproven inefficient and wasteful commercialisation. It's this that needs debating, not scapegoating.
