“Unfairness” of locums’ higher pay must be tackled, says NHS chief

The NHS must work harder to balance doctors’ desire for flexible working with the “intrinsic unfairness” of locum doctors earning substantially higher rates of pay than their staff colleagues, the head of NHS England has told The BMJ.
Simon Stevens said that although he was not advocating “complete rigidity” of working practices, he was concerned that the NHS workforce had become too “casualised,” akin to the app based taxi firm Uber.
