Swine flu vaccine is unlikely to raise risk of overall birth defects, study finds

Being given the H1N1 influenza vaccine during pregnancy does not seem to be associated with an increased risk of overall birth defects, a Swedish study published in Annals of Internal Medicine has found.1 However, the researchers did not completely rule out a raised risk for specific birth defects.
Previous research has shown conflicting risk estimates for congenital malformation in pregnant women from the Pandemrix vaccine in the first trimester, with odds ratios ranging from 0.67 to 2.18.
