Hilary Shaw moved to London from her native Cheshire in 1950 and began her medical training at the Royal Free Hospital, which was then in Gray’s Inn Road. Once qualified, she did her medical house job at the Royal Free, and went to Whipps Cross Hospital for her surgery post. In 1957 Hilary moved south of the Thames to work in the pathology department at Lambeth Hospital, where she worked with Bert Achong, who was to become a close friend.
