Quite bluntly but simply the NHS urgently needs to become a good employer. Medical students pay for their own education: there is no moral imperative for them to stay in this country. The NHS needs to nurture its staff to provide excellent working conditions, including pay and pensions; it needs to make them feel so supported that no one will think of working abroad or retiring early. The NHS needs to learn to love its staff.
