NHS must rein in spending on specialised services, MPs warn

The disproportionate growth in spending on specialised healthcare services in England is putting the financial sustainability of the wider NHS at risk, MPs have warned.

In a new report the House of Commons Public Accounts Committee said that NHS England would need to make “tough decisions” to stay within its budget for specialised commissioning in the future.1

Leaders must focus on ensuring that new drugs and medical equipment are affordable, that services are delivered cost effectively, and that levels of demand for specialised services are better managed, the report advised. Failure to do so would affect the …
