Barbara Campbell Edwards was born in Liverpool. Her first appointment after qualifying was as a house surgeon at Leeds Women’s Hospital. Further medical and surgical house jobs followed, leading to a Diploma in Obstetrics and Gynaecology in 1953. After a period of GP locum work, Barbara went on to specialise in anaesthetics, obtaining her Diploma as Doctor of Anaesthetics in 1957. Her work took her to many parts of England, Northern Ireland, and the USA.
