Frank Murphy was born in Altrincham and attended grammar school, university and medical school in wartime Manchester. He spent the following 10 years as a clinician in west Africa. Initially a national serviceman, he was commissioned as a medical officer with the British Army and spent four years in the Royal West Africa Frontier Force.
