Last week England’s health secretary, Jeremy Hunt, promised to change how the NHS 111 telephone triage helpline operates and connects with GPs, after a report into the death of 1 year old William Mead from septicaemia in December 2014.1 Latest figures show a big rise in calls to the helpline, with calls for the weekend of 22-24 January up by more than a quarter on the same weekend last year.
