The likelihood of emergency readmission to hospital within seven days of discharge may be higher among patients discharged at weekends, new figures for England indicate, though further analysis would be needed to establish a trend, if any.
Experimental figures published by the Health and Social Care Information Centre show that the proportion of emergency readmissions within seven days of discharge was 3.2% among patients discharged on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday but 4.9% among those discharged on Sunday.1 The rates were 3.3% on Thursdays, 3.5% on Fridays, and 4.1% on Saturdays. …
