Sabina Jeannette Strich was born in Munich into an intellectual Jewish family who forestalled persecution by moving initially to Italy and finally Cambridge. She attended a boarding school in Holland and the Perse School, Cambridge, from which she obtained a scholarship to Lady Margaret Hall.
