Joseph Andre Maudar was born in Mauritius in 1933. He was educated there until he was accepted as a medical undergraduate in Dublin. His first language was French, and although he spoke English fluently, he always maintained that he thought in French. He certainly did retain a slight French accent. After qualifying he moved to England, to Accrington Victoria Hospital, where he met his wife to be, Joan, a theatre sister.
