No link between macrolide antibiotics and ventricular arrhythmias, study finds

Use of macrolide antibiotics in older adults is not associated with an increased risk of ventricular arrhythmias, a large retrospective cohort study has found.1

The findings contradicted those of a previous study that found an increased risk of cardiovascular death and all cause mortality in patients prescribed the macrolide antibiotic azithromycin compared with patients prescribed amoxicillin or no antibiotic at all.2
