Janet Christina Brash was born in a tenement flat in Scotstoun, Glasgow. Her mother had worked in service as a housekeeper in Kent in England; her father, from Glasgow, had been a delivery boy who would eventually become a bank manager. In the late 1940s Janet was awarded a bursary to attend Glasgow University’s medical school. After qualifying she took a job south of the border in Hexham and passed the fellowship examination for the Faculty of Anaesthetists of the Royal College of Surgeons, the then new examination …
