European and North American blood pressure guidelines, issued last year, may not be appropriate for patients from some Asian populations, particularly elderly patients, an expert opinion published online in the journal Heart Asia has said.

The authors, a team of experts from Italy, said that high blood pressure was a key risk factor for stroke, but the link between the two was much stronger in some Asian populations than in European or North American people.1
