Death after cardiac surgery is chiefly due to patient risk factors, study finds

Mortality after cardiac surgery in UK specialist centres is determined overwhelmingly by patient risk factors rather than by which health professionals or hospitals provide their care, research findings have shown.

Reporting in Anaesthesia,1 researchers analysed 110 769 cardiac surgical procedures carried out over 10 years from April 2002 to March 2012, involving 127 consultant surgeons and 190 consultant anaesthetists.
