Paul was born into a coalmining family in south Yorkshire just after the second world war and within months of the foundation of the NHS. He was educated at Hemsworth Grammar School and gained a place at Newcastle University to study zoology, from where he graduated with a BSc in 1969. As a zoologist he completed a PhD entitled “Pulmonary neoplasia, a cytodynamic study.” This may have stimulated his interest in cancer and its management as, soon after, he was accepted to study medicine at Newcastle Medical School.
