More than 2500 people in India have died from H1N1 influenza this year, compared with 218 last year, the health ministry has said. In addition, more than 39 000 cases have been reported, compared with <1000 last year.
The western state of Maharashtra, which has had the highest number of cases and deaths across the country this year, is in the midst of its worst ever H1N1 outbreak, after the official death toll reached 674, with more than 7000 confirmed cases, local media have reported. The death toll in the state has surpassed the toll of the global H1N1 pandemic in 2009 and 2010, which reported 286 and 669 deaths respectively. …
