Jack T Watters was brought up in Crieff, Perthshire, where he attended the local primary school. There, under the visionary headmaster D O MacLean, he received a broad, quintessentially Scottish, education, where singing and dancing were as important as arithmetic and reading. He then went on to Morrison’s Academy, also in Crieff, where he developed a lifelong love of language and the performing arts, with frequent school visits to the theatre in Perth and Pitlochry. Already cultured and widely educated by the time he left school, he went up to Edinburgh to study medicine, where his exposure to human suffering affected him deeply and made him determined to make a difference in the world.
Although the medical course at Edinburgh in the 1970s was tough, Jack always made time for socialising and indulging his love of music and the theatre. He rapidly …
