Deluge of responses to India’s draft law delays stricter tobacco controls

Indian government officials have had to delay the introduction to parliament of proposals to strengthen tobacco control legislation after being overwhelmed with responses to a consultation launched in January.1 The amendments to the tobacco control law, which were due to be aired in the parliament’s monsoon session (21 July to 13 August), are now expected to be heard in the winter session (usually the last week in November to mid-December), at the earliest.
