Richard Pell-Ilderton (known to friends and colleagues as Dick) was born in Ashton-under-Lyne, Lancashire, in 1921 and left school at 16. He worked briefly in a bank before joining the 2nd/9th Manchester Regiment at the outbreak of the second world war. In 1942 he was ordered to the Far East to serve in Sir Bill Slim’s “forgotten army.” …
