Smoking worsens effect of early menopause on mortality, study finds

Smoking seems to exacerbate the effect of early menopause on early mortality, a Swedish study has found.

The study, published in Menopause,1 asked a population based cohort of 25 474 postmenopausal women aged 48-83 questions about their age at menopause (based on the last menstrual period) and smoking, in a self administered questionnaire. The women were all members of the Swedish Mammography Cohort, which was established from 1987 to 1990.
