Charles Eric Camm joined Boots the Chemist in 1937 and was encouraged to become a pharmacy student. With the war under way, he volunteered for the Royal Navy as a sick birth attendant but was instead selected to undergo training for an executive commission. As a sub-lieutenant he was sent to the USA to join a new American built anti-submarine escort vessel on loan to the RN and served on Atlantic convoys, based at Freetown for nearly three years.
