Brigid Teresa McCoy (“Breda”) came from a farming family in west County Tyrone in Northern Ireland. An aspiring linguist, she taught Gaelic in summer schools in Donegal while an A level student. She was a keen debater at school, but an interest in science took her in the direction of medicine.
She loved the Guardian crossword and competed with other students to finish it first during the more tedious undergraduate lectures. She shared the prize for dermatology in final year in 1975 at Queen’s University Belfast
