Bernard Aloysius Marshall, or Benny as he was known to friends and family, was born in Dundee to Mary and Alexander Marshall. He was the youngest of four children, and he followed in his older brother’s footsteps by studying medicine at St Andrews University. He often played down this achievement and would say, as he looked at the photo of his year group, that “They passed with honours and distinction, whereas I passed with difficulty.” It was in St Andrews that he developed his lifelong love of all sports, and he was …
